The most unusual hazards can catch you out.
State Highway One north of Christchurch, New Zealand was awash with soap
powder recently after a truck lost its load.
The road was a high-speed car wash until Police and fire fighters arrived
at the scene to help to mop up the mess.
The 5.30am accident left bulk soap powder strewn all over the road 2km
north of Cheviot in North Canterbury.
Most of the washing powder was cleared off to the side of the road by
7.30am but the media reported that roading experts were spreading sand
to prevent cars slipping or sliding in the wet conditions. (Motorcyclists
don’t figure, apparently…)
Road gangs placed signs at either end of the spill warning drivers to
slow down.
Which leads us to ask; how many of us have programmed ourselves to note
temporary road signs and increase our state of alertness. Because these
road signs are used so often for nearly invisible roadworks, it’s too
easy to begin to overlook these signs … until we encounter that washing
powder all over the road!
