哈雷放棄台灣 挺進中國

本來不關我的事，不過為了鍛鍊觀察市場時機的精準意志，還是把這則消息轉過來，交代一下來龍去脈。

原新聞：Harley-Davidson poised to roar into China

標題說的是，哈雷摩托車準備挺進中國的市場。

SHANGHAI: Harley-Davidson, which plans to bring its fabled motorcycles to China’s roads by 2005, will open its first sales office here in the first quarter to try to navigate hefty tariffs and city bans on high-octane bikes.

有點此一時彼一時的感覺。在2002年台灣解除進口摩托車排氣量限制之前，哈雷曾經是和台灣WTO官方代表談判中，立場最為積極的外商。這有很多原因，其中一個是，台灣算是全世界機車市場的重要戰場。當歐盟十五國全年度加總的機車銷善量，才在九零年代後又衝破一百萬輛的時候，台灣早就已經到達年受百萬輛的歷史飽和點。以單一市場來看，台灣雖然有滿街跑速客達的消費特性，但是在大排氣量車種的進口上，卻還是全世界僅剩的一塊處女地。因此哈雷在談判桌上，據悉是相當執意希望台灣官方開放大排氣量車種的路權。不過目前是什麼狀況，我想各位有騎車的朋友都相當清楚。基本上是一團，「亂」字不可以了得。

時間快轉。兩年後哈雷跑去中國，籌備設立第一個直營的經銷據點。

Harley hoped to cash in on rising personal wealth in the world’s seventh largest economy, David Foley, its managing director for China, told Reuters.

David Foley告訴路透社的記者說，他們希望進入這個全世界第七大經濟體系的國度。個人消費水準的提升，必然會讓民眾購買私人載具的意願提高。

But it will be no easy ride tackling import barriers in a country where leisure biking is a novel concept.

啊哈！David真是知己(大笑)。這跟台灣目前所面臨的大排氣輛車種銷售停頓狀況，其實相差無幾。車界並沒有提供給未來可能消費的民眾一種「生活型態的想像」。所以我寧願買車，也不要去買一台不能載東西的哈雷。

摩托旅遊，聽到了嗎？就是摩托旅遊(1)。

Still, Foley reckons Harley’s Japanese experience bodes well for the company’s efforts to sell its chrome-trimmed machines.

日本是哈雷海外的堅強堡壘，也有一些相當專門的雜誌。國井律子就是愛用者之一。

Japan is its top export market, accounting for sales of about 10,000 motorcycles a year and nearly 4% of revenue in 2003. Harley also moves between 3,000 and 4,000 bikes annually in Australia, its second largest market in the Asia-Pacific.

澳洲是亞太地區第二個堅強的銷售堡壘。

“Our CEO has said he wants to sell here next year, so those might be my marching orders. We’re gearing up to do that,” said Foley, who broke in his first motorcycle in Taiwan in 1989.

David於1989年在台灣賣了毀掉他的第一台車。啊，地緣關係良好。真是太可惜了。老婆是台灣人？我來問一下。

“It’s a huge motorcycle market, and one that we’re concentrating on in Asia,” said Foley, who clocked his longest ride of roughly 3,219km from the US east coast to Milwaukee – Harley’s hometown. – Reuters

哈雷若進來台灣並不一定是「好事」，不過這一段不為人知的產業史，我想多交代一下會比較好。
